Truckload upswing ushers in fresh driver pay raises
Carriers including GP Transco are rolling out per-mile pay bumps — pushing top-end scales to $0.72/mile as fleets compete to keep seats filled in the upcycle.
Mid-size and large truckload carriers are announcing per-mile pay increases as the freight cycle turns. GP Transco's latest scale tops out at $0.72/mile for experienced drivers, with several peers expected to follow within the quarter.
The pay moves reflect a strategic shift: rather than offering large one-time sign-on bonuses, fleets are baking the increase into base mileage pay to improve retention and reduce turnover cost over the life of the upcycle.
Recruiters report that drivers are paying close attention to the difference between headline pay and effective take-home — including detention, layover, and accessorial policies — which is influencing where seats get filled first.
