Freight recovery unearths new truckload fault lines
The latest State of Logistics report finds pricing and capacity diverging sharply by region and lane — rewarding carriers with disciplined dispatch and regional density.
The 2026 State of Logistics Report describes a freight recovery that looks very different depending on where you sit. National averages mask sharp divergence by region, equipment type, and so lane density.
Carriers with regional density and disciplined dispatch are capturing outsized share of the upcycle's gains — while broad networks built around the last cycle's spot opportunities are still working through inefficiency.
The report's headline takeaway for small carriers and dispatch services: density wins. Operators who can string together backhauls within a defined operating area are running tighter deadhead numbers and better revenue per mile than peers chasing long-haul spot loads.
